Therapy Dog Services
Savvy Spaniels, RSA’s certified therapy dog teams, are handled by volunteers and provide services through Riley’s Angels. Certified by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD), these teams have successfully completed extensive training and practical experience. Each dog and handler work regularly to provide therapy visits to nursing homes, schools for the disabled, hospitals, community events, and critical incident follow up. They can attend funerals and visitations to ease the pain of loved ones after a tragic loss, and they can be present to provide comfort at funerals.
RSA Savvy Spaniels therapy dogs are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels bred by a local highly reputable breeder, and health checked regularly by a local veterinary. They are trained through classes such as Puppy Pre-School, Basic Manners, Advanced Obedience, and Canine Good Citizen (AKC) at Canine Bliss in Fremont, OH and through STAR Puppy (AKC), Canine Good Citizen (AKC), Fun, Fitness & Focus, and Therapy Dog (ATD) at Riley’s Angels. Dogs and handlers are tested and certified as a team, and maintain their certification through a rigorous program of training, exercise, practice and service.
Therapy dogs and handlers can visit schools after significant incidents that upset the daily routine and have emotional impacts upon teachers, children and administrators. They can visit healthcare workers who are tired and stressed from patient work and other workplace stressors. Savvy Spaniels can visit hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilties to bring smiles to the faces of residents and patients. Support for grieving families and friends after tragic loss, extended illnesses, and other life events cannot be provided better than through contact with a well-behaved, affectionate therapy dog.
In addition to teams being certified by ATD, handlers are trained and practiced in Critical Incident Stress Management, and have an extensive history of providing service to people such as emergency medical care, healthcare, or emergency case work. With a wide variety in backgrounds, handlers can adapt and serve a diverse need for mental and emotional support.
